On June 25, Japan’s Takada Corporation held a press conference. CEO Takada Majiu made his first public appearance after the disclosure of the Takada airbag incident. He apologized for the Takata airbag issue at the press conference and said that he was investigating.
However, the incident did not end here, and Takata "airbag door" continued to ferment. On the day of Takada’s press conference, Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi issued a statement saying that the number of vehicles equipped with Takada airbags was again recalled worldwide, totaling 3.18 million.
So far, the total number of vehicles recalled by Takada airbags has reached 44.22 million.
The industry believes that this number may continue to increase. Relevant agencies predict that the recall of Takata's "airbag door" will eventually exceed Toyota's "pedal door" and universal "ignition switch door", making it the largest car recall event in history.
Founded in 1933, Takata Corporation of Japan is a multinational company specializing in the production of automotive airbags, steering wheels, seat belts, electronic sensors and other automotive safety parts. It is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
Since last year, a series of recalls triggered by Takada airbags have been pushed to the forefront. The companies that announced the recall include Toyota, BMW, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Honda.
The reason for the recall of this incident is also strikingly similar: when the co-pilot airbag is deployed, the gas generator container may be damaged, causing the debris to fly out and injure the inside of the vehicle. According to statistics, it has been confirmed that Gaotian airbags are associated with 6 deaths and more than 100 injuries.
In this Takata "airbag door", almost all Japanese car companies were involved, and Honda was the most affected. On the 8th of this month, Honda announced that it would recall 106,722 cars including Civic and Feng Fan in the Chinese market.
Honda CEO Ito Takashi said recently that it will recall a vehicle equipped with Takada's defective airbags worldwide, and the total number of vehicles expected to be recalled will reach approximately 13 million. As of now, the number of Honda recalls in the United States has reached 8 million.
Honda said that if the final investigation results show that the error is on the Takada side, the company will ask Takada to compensate for some or all of the losses caused by the recall.
In this "airbag door", the German car manufacturer BMW also followed the gun. Earlier, BMW announced plans to recall about 1.6 million vehicles worldwide to replace the airbags on the passenger side, due to the rupture of the airbag inflator.
The recalled hidden danger models involved the BMW 3 Series sedan produced between May 1999 and August 2006.
Recently, it was reported that due to the quality problems of the airbags produced by Takada in the Mexican factory for BMW, Takada has agreed to transfer the gas generating device supplied to BMW from the Monclova plant in Mexico to Freiberg, Germany. Produced at the Freiberg plant. However, Takada spokesman Alby Berman said that the transfer of production is only for the parts of the BMW model.
Since 2008, the recall of more than 10 auto brands related to Takada Airbags has reached approximately 40 million units, far exceeding the 8.5 million recalls that Toyota made worldwide in 2009 due to brake failure. According to some agencies' predictions, the Takata "Airbag Door" recall scale eventually surpassed Toyota's "pedal door" and the universal "ignition switch door", making it the largest car recall in history.
